KCL has three different types of low consistency refiners and several fillings for each refiner. LC-refining trials can be performed most effectively by running fast refiner and filling changes under multiple and varying refining conditions with only a modest amount of pulp.
The minimum amount of pulp for refining trial is 200 kg (abs. dry). Raw materials can be receipted either dried in bales or via a pumping line from tank car. Refining trials are always planned in accordance with the client's requirements.
Optimizing the refining parameters for various pulps or furnish components provides opportunities to improve paper quality and reduce the production costs. Suitable refining improves the fiber bonding potential, which makes it possible to reduce the proportions of the most expensive fiber raw materials in the end product.
KCL stock preparation offers the possibility to treat chemically the raw materials during the refining trial. Using only a modest amount of pulp, Pilot-scale trials allow the effects of different parameters on the refining results for comparison and analyses. KCL’s LC refiners lend themselves for studying the refining potential of chemical pulp, for post-refining of mechanical pulp and for refining of recycled fiber.
KCL refiners are equipped with acquisition and reporting systems for the main refining parameters. Basic laboratory analyses can be tested in KCL laboratory and more specific and a wider range of measurements can be supported.
The most common way is to refine pulp for the pilot plant's paper machine trials. The effects of different type of refining can be studied also by making paper reels for further processing and testing. Refined pulp consistency can also be raised by thickening and pulp can be delivered in big bags.
